September 2008 - 'Elsie and Norm's MacBeth'
Synopsis: Elsie and Norm are a northern couple who fancy a bit of kulture, but find Macbeth a bit flowery. So Norm (a regular contributor to the Pigeon Breeder's Gazette) rewrites the story to perform in their living room for their friends. The two of them play all the parts themselves, except Banquo and Fleance who are played by stuffed pandas. There's just one witch who arrives on a vacuum cleaner and sings the blues. The banquet is beans on toast, with the ghost of Banquo under a tea towel and what about Will Shakespeare? His dad runs the local scrap yard doesn't he? Remarkably, the story remains recognizable, comprehensible even, despite the pruning out of the parts written for William's relatives! |
